Layer :Layers allows us to make changes to an image without altering the original image data. A new in Photoshop has single layer. This layer is known as background layer of a printing. One cannot change the background layer in the stacking order i.e. it is always at the bottom of stacking order. We cannot apply a blending mode or opacity to the background layer until and unless we first convert it into a layer normal layer.
We can store photographs or element of photographs on separate layers and then combine them into one composite layer, where there is no image on the layer i.e. place where the layer is transparent we can see through to the layers below. All layers in file have the same resolution.
We can draw and edit, paste or reposition elements on one layer without disturbing the others. We combine or merge, the layer, each layer remains independent of the others in the image.
1. Adding New Layer: –
Using the existing style to create a new style or apply to the different layers including drop shadows, glows. Beveling and embossing when we move or edit the contents on the layers. The layers style applied to that layer is modified correspondingly.
- Adding Layers:– We can add layers to an image in variety of ways:-
- By creating new layers or turning selection into layers.
- By converting and background to a regular layer.
- By pasting selection into an image.
- By creating type using horizontal type tool or vertical type tool.
3. Moving and Aligning the contents of Layers:-
We can reposition a layer using a move tool or align the layer using the align linked or distribute link commands.

ii). To create a mask that hides a entire layer, press “ALT” key and click the “NEWLAYER MASK” button.
5. Merging Layers:
Merging layers means to combine several layers into one and keeps file size manageable. After finalizing the position characteristics of the contents, the layers can be merged with one or more layers to create partial versions of the composite image.
a) To merge a layer within a layer below it:
To merge the two layers with each other, both the layers must be visible. Select the top layer or the layer we want to merge in the layer palette. Choose “LAYER” menu then select merger down or merge layer set.
b) To merge all visible link layer:
- Make visible all layers and link them together.
- From “LAYERS” menu select “MERGE LINKED” or choose “MERGED LINKED” from the layer palette.
6. Adding layers effects:
We can add layer effects in Photoshop by choosing “LAYERS” menu then “EFFECTS” and selecting an effect from the sub menu.
